The tool bit you pulled out of the box you bought surplus has the threading point you want, but when you use it, it turns out the guy who ground it totally burned the temper out of it, and you have to grind up a fresh point plus pick up the almost finished thread.....

if the temper were gone, how did you even get to being almost done?
 
I normally don't buy "surplus" tools of any sort, unless I can see the name and recognise the quality of the manufacturer. Occasionally, I stumble across such a tool, often a drill, and just use it for wood or plastic. Or for making something else. Most Chinese made tooling falls under the heading of "unknown" quality or temper.
 
I figured a piece of Rex 95 would be OK. I think that the last guy didn't have a cup of water by the grinder....

If he took the temper out of Rex 95, I hope he wasn't grinding freehand, you have to get it glowing....
