Cutting axle splines on a lathe?

just ran acorss this on a fiero forum:

That is basically how I would do if I only had a lathe. But instead of using a form cutter you could just use a slitting saw and make two cuts per spline.
- Set the axial slightly off center to cut one side of the tooth, rotate the axial 1/6 of the turn and cut the next slot, etc
- Reset the axial off center in the other direction to cut the other side of the tooth, rotate & repeat

I'll have to read up on slitting saws. Ie: hss or carbide, tooth count, etc.

I havent used one before....
