Good evening from Philadelphia gents......
Quick question for you South Bend experts. I have a 9" South Bend CL670Z. Can someone verify for me that the taper in the spindle is a #3 Morse Taper? I need to order a dead center for it and I just wanted to be absolutely sure. #3? Thanks so much.....

Generally speaking, lathes, including SB use the same number taper in the headstock as in the tailstock, which I think in this case is a #2 MT, then, they use a 2 - 3 MT sleeve in the headstock to bush it down. This sleeve is cut off shorter than standard on the small end so that the center, which has no tang can be knocked out. The reason for all this is so that both centers can be installed in the headstock for truing up, the headstock center is usually left soft, the tailstock center being hardened.

Oh, very interesting. Thank you for that piece of information. I was trying to figure out which MT to order before I knocked the chuck off just to be sure. Looks like I'm knocking the chuck off. Lol. Thanks again.
