I have an opportunity to acquire a 10" south bend lathe. I went out to the South Bend site to look up the catalog number, and was not able to find the codes that are on the tag. Can anyone assist with the AF designation is? south bend brian2.jpg
 
Typically the model number is on the gearbox information plate.

Yes, for models 1947 and beyond. The 199XX is a model number of an early regular 10" lathe, or a 10R (small spindle bore). Not sure what the "AF" means - it might be a war time military special. Here's a 1943 catalog page of a 199AN model:

Well, I finally received the serial number: 1077 RKR8

Well, I picked her up today, and I am pleased. She is going to need some basic cleaning and TLC, but it does not appear to be beat up or clapped out. some quick pics:
