May I ask why you consider this to be impossible for you? Yes, the gentleman in the video had a fancy tool grinder and all, but you can do this, just as many other people have. Granted, you may have to keep the size of your cube down a bit if you have a smaller lathe, but turner's cubes can be made successfully on any size lathe. You just have to work and think within the limitations of the equipment you have. There is more than one way to skin a cat, so don't assume that something is impossible for you.
 
After you have the square done all you need to do is hold a bore depth and dia to make a cube inside a cube. I have made a few.
