Has anyone converted a Star nut type clutch with a lever type. Can it be done? That star nut kills my hand when releasing it.

Some of the parts manuals have upgrade instructions, so I have to assume SB sold a conversion kit at one time.

Would a larger knob work better for you? You should be able to turn something in a size that is comfortable for you to grab.
If it is taking a lot of force to get the clutch to grab, is it possible that it needs servicing? There may be chips in the internal mechanism.

As stated above you need to service and adjust your clutch. I only have to turn my knob from 12 o’clock to 1 o’clock to fully engage. Same to disengage. Mines on a 11 Sheldon but same set up pretty much.

Thanks everyone. It seems to engage ok but releasing it is sometimes a problem. I'll tear into it and see what's up with it. The lathe has been sitting in the barn for the last 25 years so I'm sure it could use some TLC.
