ACME threading question

One thing that I do when cutting Acme threads is to cut a short diameter on the end of the blank to the root diameter size, so that one can see when the root diameter is reached, many commercially made lead screws are made this way. Also many times, I have found that the finished screw is too tight a fit on the gage nut, if that is the case, I grind a bit off the end of the tool and cut deeper until I get a proper fit; for screws that do not need a tight fit (in smaller pitches), I sometimes grind a tool for one pitch coarser than the one I am cutting.

One of the 1st things I did as a total newb on my 1920 Springfield lathe was make a threaded backing plate for a chuck. 2 1/4" 4TPI acme and I didn't break anything? One of my greater machining successes.
