1018 surface hardness

I've noticed that pieces made with 1018 are easily marked up or scratched in use - inserting in chucks or collets, or just general handling.

Attached photo of two 3/4" shanks made from 1045 (top) and 1018. 1045 is like new.

I presume this is due to hardness? Brinell 180 vs 125, respectively. Are there other properties that might be in play here?
