'93 Sporty 1200

They probably take too many wine breaks at the Fiat factory. :) I would have had a much more reliable car if I'd gotten a Fiat instead of the GMC lemon.

Bought 08 883 XL , one yr. old cheap and under 2000 miles on it. FI and is a sweet heart to ride. did one long road trip . It did find . Would run fast enough to win a speeding ticket if happen to get hit by speed gun. Put long rode glide rear air shocks on. New bike take offs for like under $60. Put wide mustang seat and tall wide windshield on. Point is seat feels good and it will turn well in corners. I like most all bikes. One thing about a Sport is BT HD guys don't want to talk to you because you ride girl's bike and the metric guys look at you like your one of those HD guys.:alien:

Randy,
Nice looking bike, very clean for the year.
I owned 3 dirtsters so far in my life. The first and my first bike was a 73. Got it as a basket case, next one was my first brand new bike, an 86 1100. very big improvement over the ride of the older iron heads. the last was a 92 883 that I punched out to 1200 that bike jumped. Gator is right about the race platform. I now have a 08 Dyna, Because I just ain't old enough for a dresser yet. For the record only have a few metal parts I made for mine. and a few more leather, One that combines the 2.

Gregg,
You must be hanging around the HOG owners group. That is where I found guys with that attitude and a 2 year old bike with 5000 miles on it. (hard core) Most of the older old school guys had sportsters in the 60s and 70s. big twins as I understand were considered your Dads bike. at least around Chicago, Milwaukee, Detroit. 71 when the 1st super glides came out started the change.

Maybe it was the windshield that made them think it was a girls bike.:dunno:

Randy/Gregg,
Did you guys know Evil Knievel Made all his bike jumps on a Dirtster?
Mark

Evil made most of his jumps on a XR , That "R" stands for race.{Not Dirtster} his first jump he used a Honda 350 then a Norton Atlas for one jump. A Triumph T-120 for 15 jumps. 8 jumps on a American Eagle 750. And not counting the Snake River sky cycle {Steam powered rocket} Evil made 39 jumps with a XR-750.
He crashed a Triumph on the Caesars Palace jump his longest at 141'.
And this is for all the iron head sportster riders. XLCH means Sportster "Competition Hot".
Don't get me wrong after more than 40 years of living ridding owning and fixing motorcycles I don't care what the name badge says a well built machine is a work of art. I'v found nightmares with some of every brand.

Gator I stand corrected I always thought it was a 900 or 1000 he jumped. But I did not count the snake river jump as a bike.
I always thought the CH stood for Charlie Horse. :confusion: Correct me if I am wrong but wasn't the XLCH a Kick only model? with a XL? having a electric start. Or was I just lucky to have kick only on my XLCH.
I miss the old bikes for the ease of finding parts on the road. the down side was you needed parts more on the road. the new bikes run great and break less but good look with parts when they do break if you are not near a dealer (even then they may have to order it).

Markhnx,
Yup the XLCH was kick start only.

The XL platform came in many different configurations. The XR was for racing Two front heads and dual carbs. The XLCR was a cafe racer . They had a model called the Night Train that was bad to the bone. They made a touring model that had a Super Glide tank and a bigger seat for road trips.I think that it was badged as a XLT.
As far as dependability goes I had a Ducati bagger when I was still in my teens that I flat out beat the snot out of it never let me down. On a bet I drove it into a local tavern and put the front wheel against the bar and did a burn out that smoked out the bar. They banned me for life from that place . But I won the bet and drove it home. Needless to say I'v grown out of that kind of behavior. But it was fun while it lasted.
My first Harley was a Panhead and I was forever tinkering with it. That dog would mark it's spot every time I parked it. I figured the only reason they put saddle bags on that bike was to carry all the extra oil it leaked.
I road that Pan all the way to Idaho and back to Florida. And every time it broke down I just used that as an excuse to make new friends.
Except for my kick start knee I don't regret one second of any of it. You only go around once in this life so grab a big chunk and enjoy it.

Gator if we ain't met we should have. Comin out of Chicago I took that 73 CH to Dallas and back a few times, Detroit all the time, TN, plenty, and made friends all along the way. still have quite a few although I don't see or hear from them much any more. Old bone yard parts got me home a few times. Bootheel of MO. Regulator died small little service shop/salvage yard, two bucks bought me a VW's bosch regulator to get me home and then some. Ran a I think it was 23 tooth front secondary sprocket I think stock was 21 tooth. no hot rod but it ran 70-75 real nice. this was my first bike and that was 83-86. I am still doing it just not as much as I did back then, and no I do not regret it, I really love and miss going somewhere almost every weekend of the summer. Never did Ride into FL. though. LA. two years ago so far down the MS River we ran out of road.
I know I'm rambling.

Had an XLCH many years ago then my son decided he wanted a bike and found a '72 Honda CB350 which was basically the same as my 1st bike an SL350. I bought mine in parts and brought it home some in the trunk, some in the back seat, the rest in a trailer so I had no problems helping him restore his. In the process found a good project for myself and here's the result.

His is the green one mine's the red one.

I tell my wife they aren't toys - there more like Christmas decorations.
