I have need of a 5c collet that will hold a 1.250 dia shaft in my spin index. Does such a size even exist.

1.0625" is the biggest 5C goes

It may vary from brand to brand of collets, but I think most brands of 5C collets will not pass the part all the way thru over 1" diameter.

I am going to need a 7/16 5c collet tomorrow, If I remember, I will see what my largest one is.

If your shaft needs to go all the way through the collet your out of luck. If speed is not an issue, "holescreek"s suggestion 3 jaw chuck, seems like reasonable price and good suggestion. Other that that an emergency collet machined to size, carefully, would probably be most accurate, and depending on your releasing mechanism, the fastest.

hardinge makes a step chuck for 1.25 but it doesn't have much depth the biggest 5c collet I have seen is 1 1/8" that has a through hole hope this helped.

Thanks guys... I think I will go with the emergence collet and turn it in my lathe.. I think it will have less run out than a 3 jaw... I saw a emergence collet on the net but didn't know that it could be custom fit in a lathe... This I can do...
