Had some time today so I wrote up a little show and tell on converting an inexpensive 14" Wood Cutting band saw to cut metal with a DC motor conversion.

It is posted on my web page as it contains lots of photographs

Thanks for the great write-up, and your other interesting articles..

How well does it work on thicker than 1/8" steel, does it stall at lower speeds, or does the motor have necessary torque ?

I've not been able to stall this new motor. I was recently cutting up 3/4" 6061 Aluminum with no issues. The thickest steel I've cut was low carbon flat stock at 1/4". It all depends on the proper blade. A low tooth count, hook type with lots of set for the 3/4" Aluminum and 12 -14 teeth per inch for the 1/4" steel. Bi-Metal blades is all I use.

Roy: Wish I had run on to your solution a year ago. I did a similar conversion but installed a 3 phase motor and and a VFD in stead. It works great, but your solution is better. Thanks for the write up.
