I would like to store some lathe chucks. New ones come wrapped in some sort of paper and have a light coat of some sort of oil. What is this paper and what is this oil and where can I get it?

Way oil will work along with that VCI paper. I think just about any petroleum-based oil will work. I use vegetable-based Camellia Oil and have no rust problems on stored stuff, even in Hawaii.

Want the ultimate? Want to come back in 10yrs and have no rust anywhere? Want to not have to go through having to coat your parts only to have it rust where you couldn’t apply it?

Then go to Target and get this exact tote because it has a seal all the way around the top.

And get you a set of these foam emitters from Bullfrog and put them on the lid or high on the inside wall of the tote where they can’t touch the metal stick the chucks in there, seal the tote and you are good indefinitely. Period. The emitters never wear out, are non toxic.

For end of season storage I coat mine with wd 40 oil or hydraulic oil and wrap with saran wrap. Been doing this for years haven't had any rust yet.

My lathe and tools are in storage. Have been for years. The best thing I have found to protect them from the wet PNW weather is a good coating of WD-40. It gets into the nooks and crannies of the chucks and other tools. Not had a single speck of rust show up in almost 10 years.

I always use Kroil or Knock er loose , whatever is in the front on the shelf . I definitely prefer the Kroil when doing real work .

I prefer the Kroil too, but it is hard to find in my area unless you want the gallon size. So I use WD.
