What Surprises Me

Living here in Oak Ridge, it surprises me that the kind of town it is and the things that go on here.. that there would be a lil bit better choices in being able to get tooling around here.. it is very dry here.. believe it or not, just about all I have been able to find at least online listed is Fastenal and HF.. ha.. well, I went to the Fastenal that is in Oak Ridge, low and behold.. they had some endmills. What a laugh.. most of it, 1 inch or larger and not much of that either. A few drill bits.. I really was dismayed at the lack.. they said that if there was anything that I needed.. they could order it.. here was this huge outlet store, with plenty of room and hardly any inventory.

What if a jobber needed something because something broke.. well ummm wait is all I can say.. of course, it would also be considered poor planning on the jobbers part too.. but then one never knows what may happen.

I was just saddened a lil by the lack of supplies in this area. Though, the scrap yard right around the corner(I can walk to it) has plenty of bits and pieces of stock just the right size for me from the local machine shops.. I drooled today over some 100 lbs slabs of lead in neat lil bricks.. my thoughts were reeling of many lead projectiles.

Our local Fastenal store employees have been very kind to me,BUT they wanted over $200.00 for a TECO Bridgeport size clamping set. $250.00,I think. I got it on sale from Enco for $54.00. This was over 10 years ago.

Lead is a very difficult item to legaly obtain and manage. The ROHS compliance act has made nearly all lead controlled down to the last gram. I used to print in a large offset and Lino-type plant and we used lead bars to make the type. The days of that are long gone, too many deaths from lead poisoning and other related illnesses. If you need a small quantity, you can go to a car tire joint and get used wheel weights, just make sure you pick out the zinc ones before melting or your batch will be ruined. Hope this helps you find some non standard sources for raw materials. I am guilty of dumpster diving and junk collecting to get things to use for parts and pieces.

What do dive stores in USA stock for weights? Walk into any Aussie dive shop and you will find 1/2 ton of shiny lead weights in all sorts of shapes and sizes open to anybody who wants to purchase. Or tackle shops for that matter, except their molds are usually a bit smaller :)

Cheers Phil

last time I went diving was 2006, and lead diving weights were still around. Last time I went fishing was around the same time, and same story. I assume nothing has changed, but could be wrong.

Lead fishing weights are still available in California, though their use is prohibited in some lakes.

I have seen the what a lead brick looks like that comes from K25 and these were no where near that. Yes, in the days that I was making my 44 mag bullets, I was using wheel weights. In fact, using a Keith 240 gr Semi Wadcutter, the actual weights came out to 249 grs a bullet. Using 25.0 grs of WW296, the poor thing would go through a live popular tree from about 20 feet away.. the tree was prob close to 3 feet thick. That was using a Ruger Redhawk 5 inch. All I have now are .45's. I was trying to sell my ballgun since I don't shoot bullseye anymore, all my shooting is done mostly at 1000 yards now.. well and some 600 yard matches too.. mostly with a .223. I have been shooting highpower since 1999 and have been to the Nationals at Camp Perry 10 times. I have shot National Match Service rifle, match rifle, smallbore, mid and long range prone is all I do now. In fact this year at the Nationals, I was asked to consider to try out for the US Veterans International Palma team. Not sure if I will, it would mean going back to shooting a 308.
