what RPM is the best for threading?

I'm practicing threading on my grizzly g0602 and can't figure out what the best RPM to set the lathe at.
I'm using 1" 6061, and right now I'm trying a 64 TPI since ultimately what I want to do is fine threads.

TIA, Dave

Myself I don't use feed and speed. My lathe only turns 300 rpm on max and only use that to sand and polish. I find that touch and feel works for me.A lite pass to check the thread count then 10 or 20 at a time.Till I get what I need.
Just rember that all metal has hard and soft spots in it .So don't walk away when you thread.Sharp tool and plenty of lube of your choice is my advice.

The main thing with single point threading aluminum is using a cutting fluid that prevent chip welding to the threading tool. The recomended SFM for threading aluminum alloys is 150sfm which for 1" stock is 573 rpm's. I wouldn't try cutting a 64 tpi thread at that speed if you're just learning. Just find a speed that you're comfortable running at that leaves a nice looking thread.

thanks, I'll change the gearing tomorrow, and try something like 20 TPI

On the plus side, I did find out how to put a mirror shine on aluminum, looks real purty like :lmao:

Practice a little bit first. Chuck a piece of stock but back the bit out so you don't make a cut and practice engaging and disengaging the apron as though you were actually making the cut. Maybe put a marker spot where you want to end the threads to practice the disengage. In a few shots, you'll get the hang of it so start moving the bit in. +1 on the advice to turn very slow at first. Aluminum is forgiving stuff and like someone else said, a little fluid is helpful.

PS: It's occurred to me I've never made a triple-thread. ...Gotta figure that out and give it a try.

Success!

well, the text in the Grizzly manual and the pictures they showed weren't exactly the same, :think1:so I configured the gears using the gears in the label on the front of the machine, in the locations shown in the pictures and ignored the text, set the lathe at slowest speed setting (150), and set the knobs as per the label.

perfect 64 TPI threads on 1" 6061 tube.

now onto the more interesting part of internal threading on a piece of 6061, and seeing if I can get the 2 pieces to mate. :bitingnails: or at least be close friends

what better way to spend a cold rainy day
