Used for checking flat surfaces and alignment of components. When placed on a flat surface the knife edge allows you see how flat the surface is by the light you can see coming thru from the other side or you can use feeler gages along the edge.
 
you can check head and blocks of cars, lathe beds or mill tables, sounds like a good deal. tt
 
you can even get an idea of surface finish with it by putting a light behind it. the light passes under in the valleys
I dont use mine for that, i used mine to see if a head is flat enough for a new gasket or if it needed resurfacing
very handy tool and a good brand

With a thin straight edge,you can see as little as .0001" of light through it. That's why some accurate squares and straight edges have beveled edges.
