I picked up a lot of taps and dies and have been sorting through them ...some of the dies are hex shaped and appear to be bronze or brass ....what? Why? what for? Thanks for your answers in advance

Must of the time the Hex are thread chasers. But I've never seen them made out of brass or bronze.

See if a Magnet sticks to them, maybe its just a coating.
About all that brass dies could do is maybe soft wood or plastic (Delron)

That's funny, I know to check them with a magnet ....BUT I didn't.....I'll check tomorrow ....feeling a bit embarrassed, but we've all done such things ...at least I hope that's the case....It made no sense to me that they were soft metal...I'll post back

I'd guess they're TiN coated, although that's more of a gold color than brass.

Hex and thicker than usual dies are for rethreading over damaged threads. You use them with a wrench after you get them screwed on.

They are Tin coated steel ....I'll end up with a pretty nice set of them ...Thanks
