How do you use thread chasers/restorers to repair damaged threads, and, do they work well?

I have used files for cleaning threads. They have special files for this with the correct spacing but you can also use a regular file.
As previously mentioned this results in serviceable but not pristine threads. Don

Three of the thread files have most of the treads you would ever find. That would give you 16 different inch and 8 metric thread chasers, start where threads are good and work to where they are bad. Have used them in lathes sometimes and they work good there. May want to run in reverse to keep out of chuck.
