Okay, guys. I got this little piece in with the tooling for the Victoria. It was in a block holding a couple of indexable cutters, so it seems like he wanted to have it fairly handy.

The shank is 1" and fits nicely in a collet. It only sticks out about 3/4" past the collar.

The shank itself is drilled through at 1/4", but widens out to 9/32 for the 'bottom' half inch. The side hole is 13/32" and goes exactly half-way through - flat-bottomed rather than drill point. The setscrew isn't long enough to go all the way to a 1/4" tool mounted in the shank, if it's some kind of endmill holder.

If that's what it is, could there be a plunger for the side hole missing?

The finish strikes me as more factory than shop-built. Anyone seen something like this before?

What part are you calling shank/collet/collar?

Is the hole in the bigger of the two pieces perfectly drilled or is it off a smidge so that when the second piece is inserted into it the second piece is out of alignment by a degree or two? (Is it maybe a home-made broach?)

I'm stumped and I've pulled a lot of metal "things" out of the bottoms of a LOT of old machinist chests.

The shank is the smaller shaft sticking out of the larger collar, which has the setscrew. The collet is on the vertical spindle of the mill and, I assume, is where this thing is meant to be mounted in use.
