Vintage Brown & Sharpe Dividing Head Needed for a Victorian Mill

Hi All,

I have a Victorian milling machine made by F & J Butterfield, Keighley, England that I saved from a pumping station in North West England. It worked in the one location from new when made in the 1880s. The machine is largely complete with countershaft. As can be seen from the photo, the machine has the tailstock and all of the dividing head wheels but the dividing head went walkies a long time ago (probably when the last engineer left - although there were many strange goings on with the machines I saved from there).

I attach a picture of a period Brown & Sharpe dividing head (example photo attached) which the mill would have had (as I have seen in other British-built machine tool catalogues), probably being the only type, or copies thereof, sold at the time. I wondered whether anyone might have one, or know of someone who has one, that they would be willing to part with for a price to complete the mill as necessary? If not, anyone who has one I would welcome measurements I would welcome chatting to.

Thanks all in advance.

Will

When you put it back in service , pictures please we love pictures. Are you going to put a line drive in or convert it over to an electric motor?

Here's one in New Jersey.
Thanks for sharing that - sadly not me as something I must have just missed! I am sure another will come up at some point. Although I am based in the UK I do have friends in the US which would make the shipping issue much less of a hassle when it comes to getting one.

The plan is to be running off a common line shaft - electric motor driving for now but maybe eventually steam (the dream). I have even got a couple of converted machines that I am returning to line shafting! Did a mock up per the attached photo with the countershaft, although the hangers aren't old enough. Whilst it saved them from the scrap back in the day, I can't keep them that way. Too much of a purist. When I get the machines on line shafting, I will be sure to add more photos. Thanks
