Video: Threading Made Easier with a Dog Clutch

Looks like you have to add the dog clutch and the crank on the far end of the lead screw in order to do this. I wonder where you can get information on how the mods were done.

It's a slick little arrangement he's got. He hasn't updated his site with details, he may be working on it as an article for HSM.

I like the idea of the retractable tool, but is it solid enough when engaged? I cannot tell how it works..just in a beveled slide with a cam lock?

Bah, I checked his "What's new" page, but apparently this is so new he hasn't even updated "What's new" ;)

Good catch. Looks like another great design.

The video in the original post didn't link to YouTube where I provided links to details of the dog clutch and the retracting tool holder (links below). Both of these have been on my site for quite a while but based on a discussion of threading on the 7x12 Group I thought it would be helpful to make a video showing how these two work together to eliminate most of the excitement that accompanied my early threading adventures.

The retracting tool holder is a Geo. Thomas design and is quite solid, no chatter from looseness in the holder. Plans are available in his book, "Model Engineer's Workshop Manual".

The dog clutch concept is from "Screwcutting in the Lathe" by Cleeve, where I adapted it to my 7x12, mostly building from scrap. Adapting it to a different lathe might need a considerably different approach - e.g. my scheme is much cruder than Cleeve's... but it works.

Thanks for the info John.
I recently purchased a 7x10 for delicate work and have been looking at different mods for it. i will attempt to figure out how it is done, most likely will need to purchase the book with the plans.
The half nut engagement lever on my new 7x10 HF is not very smooth at all and it would make threading a real hassle.

We are happy to have John here on this site. He is the most knowledgeable person I know on the small lathes. He is also a good friend. We look forward to seeing more from him. Welcome to our home John.

I bookmarked his page a long time ago for all the great ideas he has. I have to confess that I'm having trouble getting my head around how the clutch operates. I'd love to see some more detailed pics of the clutch if you have them and have the time. :)
