I found this on youtube and thought to share it, it is simple and clever. Small threading mind you but the concept is good
It also explains how my tapping head for my milling machine works. I paid almost $600.00 for it.
Had I know about this concept I would have made one myself.
My tapping head is quite aggressive in it's engagement, especially in reverse .. I never liked that, something I would change if I made one.
Perhaps incorporating a heavy duty wind up spring once reverse is engaged instead of the dog clutch .. "BANG" everytime.

If anyone has any ideas on how to make an ultra smooth engagement system, feel free to chime in : )

Thanks for sharing that, dd. Something else I can add to my list of things to build! Most of the time I would not need one, but there are times where something like that would be quite handy.

The Procunier brand of tapping heads provides smooth operation by use of cone clutches. From a manual I viewed from their web site you can get an idea how they work. Two cone clutches run in oil and have a friction material (I keep remembering cork) to provide smooth tapping "feel" when using in a drill press or mill. They use a planitary gear system for reversing which provides the desired rapid reversal & extraction of the tap. A friend gifted one to me but I have not
had a need to use it just yet.

Hello Uncle harry,
I went to Procunier's site but could not find that tapping head exploded view.
In fact across the net there is nothing that I could find relating the an exploded view on this subject.
Easy fix I'll take apart my T H when I get a chance.
I'm not too fussed over it but it would be int to see the Procunier cones as you described.
Cheers

Hi, After I posted my reply I tried again to find that manual and finally was successful. Try procunier 1200 2E
in your search. It should bring up a 2 page document with some section views and dis-assembly/assembly instructions with repair directions. If you can't find it I'll try to get a more complete search address.

I'll post pics of when I get my tapping head apart. The we can produce plans so members can build their own with the smooth reverse engagement modification :))

I almost wanted to build one when I made my tilting mini pallet.

Somewhere, perhaps in a recent HSM or PIM, I saw details on building one of those.
