Versatile Indicator Base

I don't know if this is technically metrology but I hate it when I have to stick a mag base on my lathe ways as I'm never happy with the way I'm handcuffed into a small area with poor grip. Now I keep a 4 x 16 piece of plate steel that's 1 inch thick on my shelf. Just lay it across the bed anywhere and you have a great spot to put a mag base for an indicator. It gives my lots of position options and is heavy enough stay put.
