Turning between centers - technique question

Can I do this to save time or is it a bad/dangerous practice?

Put a dead center in the 3-jaw, live center in the tailstock, and drive the dog with one of the chuck jaws? Is taking off the chuck and replacing with the faceplate necessary? This would be a 1.25" OD part about a foot long if that matters.

Sure you can do that, I've done that for years. I turn the center though, so it's concentric with the head-stock center line.

Yup -- I made a tapered bushing with a straight OD to fit my MT3 Dead Center. You only have to make it once and with care it's good forever.

Happens all the time here. As always, know what you're doing and make sure the fixture is rigid. Its wise that you had the courage to ask!

Yup, it's done all the time. Be sure to turn your own center or at least indicate the one you have, 3-jaws are not that precise.
