I saw a how to a while back for a trapped ball project that is somewhat similar. They melted lead and used that to hold the freed cuts after doing 3 of the 4 sides then finished.

Use a plug with a shoulder on it on the free sides to hold in place while cutting the others free. see the machinist bedside reader series, book 2 I think has the plans for on a lathe and mill
