So I was at the local junk shop this morning where I occasionally find useful stuff (got a nice Albrecht keyless chuck there a year ago, and the $10 power hacksaw I posted a while ago). Today there was a basket full of end mills, lathe tool bits, and some other stuff, all randomly packed into bags by somebody who didn't know what was what. Guy says $1/bag or $20 for all, well that's a no brainer, not even worth sorting through to know it's worth $20:

There's some dozens of end mills, most in good shape, ranging from 1/2" down to 1/32, about as many tool bits, a couple of end mill holders, a couple V-blocks, a thread repair file, and some assorted taps, drills, and reamers. A good day!

The one mystery is the circular block, about 1.25" diameter x 1.5" long, with a bunch of different sized holes... any ideas?

Very nice haul!!

The round thing is a bench block. The holes are to assist in driving pins out. They give support on the backside of the piece you are driving the pin out of.

I'm guessing, could the round hole item be a hand tapping starter ?

It's small for a bench block, but maybe... it's definitely homemade.

Bench blocks come in different sizes. I have a small one that is really for watch or clock makers.

Of course,I can't see how thick yours is. Possibly,if just a flat sheet with holes,it is a gauge for checking cutter sizes,or the like.

Nice buy! The cute little plastic bags and the time someone spend filling them is worth $20!

Uncle Harry and Seaco are correct, it is a hand tapping starter block. Congratulations on a great haul!!!
