Today I learned how brittle cast iron is.....

At least I can get a replacement part from stuart.

I was placing it in a vise and, with some tension in the vise, smacked it with a deadblow brass hammer. Not real sharply, but I must have had it loaded up funny and it broken into about 12 pieces like glass.

I got on line and stuart sells the piece for 10 pounds + 7 shipping....so about 30 bucks I figure.

I recently had a section roll forming die pop an end off, the lateral forces it takes to roll decent walled 2" RHS and keep the corect shape are amazing. It shot off the machine like a rocket (but i actually didn't see it happen).

There was no way I was replacing that with another cast unit. Turned up a new die from 4140.

I'd throw up some pics as we all love but work have blocked out photobucket.

Here's some pics you prepared earlier Jason:biggrin:

I broke the sole plate on a Stuart 10V.

I could make one, but it would be out of character for the motor if I made it in Al. That was my first thought as well. I have some plate 6061 that is thick enough to use, but the aesthetics would be wrong.

Stuart has the spares available so I will go with that. My only disappointment is that the castings were from the 60's so they were well aged and of fine quality. I have heard modern Stuart castings are not as nice.

So why make the part out of aluminum? I was thinking STEEL. It's stronger, but will rust just like the cast iron.

Educate me: What is a Stuart 10V? I have no idea.

Because I had aluminum on hand...

Here is what it looks like...

I broke the part that crankshaft runs through.

I'm impressed. Did this motor come as a kit that required machining or just the major catsings and you made the rest? Either way a ton of good loking workmanship and a really neat conversation piece. Thanks for the great pics.

Those aren't mine....Those are ones that someone else built....

I am busy breaking mine!!!

It comes as a casting kit and some brass bits and screws.

Here is a great thread about one:

There is a great book that walls you though the process. (even warns you how brittle CI can be!) DO NOT BUY IT on amazon as it is terribly expensive and is little more than a pamphlet.

Once I am done with this I will have 2 copies of the book available.
