Hi all,
I am using an Aloris BXA-20 universal indexing tool holder with TNMG 332 MR inserts.
These are 60 degree triangle inserts.
My first question is what is the best way I can set up the tool in one position to handle turning and facing without repositioning the cutter?
My next question has to do with grades and wiper designations. I do not understand these at all.
What would I be best off with for general steel use ? Can I use the same for aluminum and brass?
I'm getting a decent finish turning drill rod now, but not so good with facing.
Thanks

Triangle inserts are not the best choice for turning and facing with the same tool, use a shape made for both at the same time such as an 80º diamond (C) or trigon (W).
If you don't have to make time just change tools, I like a square insert tool for light facing as it allows forming a 45º chamfer easily on a manual machine.

As far as grades go use them on whatever material the manufacturer produced them for, that being said most aluminum specific inserts work well on plastics, brasses and some bronze and will also produce excellent finishes on steels using a very light DOC. Wiper inserts were developed in an effort to produce a better finish at a much higher feed rate in production work, buying wiper inserts will probably be a waste of money for you and they require careful set up and use.

Good luck
