Three jaw chuck -vs- octagonal barrel

Hi Folks, As I am preparing to thread my 1st barrel, I find that my 3jaw chuck doesn't contact the flats on the octagon barrel uniformly. Does this matter? Will the barrel turn true, or slip? I do have a 4jaw (somewhere). I do have a fixture on the spindle end that will tighten onto the flats. Just a newbie question.

Don't use the three jaw directly on the barrel. If you have a properly sized octagonal bushing/sleeve that is split, then you can do it, otherwise you need a 4 jaw.

Thanks Tony, That's what I was thinking, but a bit lazy about digging out the 4Jaw. looks like I may try to make a bushing in the future,

Thanks again,

This is why I keep a Bison 4 jaw universal chuck on my lathe. Can hold squares as well as round. I don't often hold hex,but have 3 jaws for that,or collets if not too large.
