Threading problems

Need some info on your current setup and technique.
Are you setting your tool on center?
Do you have the compound set to 29-30 degrees towards the chuck?
Are you feeding only on the compound and not the cross slide?
Do you have the right tool profile?

Lets start here and go from there.

here is a thought make sure one side of your tool is not off enough to catch your finish thread:thinking: Mac

My first check on bad finish is tool height followed by tool wear/chipping.

I had some trouble with spindle bearing preload while threading, spindle could move in and out about 0.010" doesn't sound like much, but horrible on threading.

Later I also found wear on the 4 jaw chuck that would allow part to shift while machining.

Half the fun of using vintage equipment is wringing all the bugs out.
