Threading insert designation question.

I am looking to cut a new jack screw for a piece of equipment. So I need an Acme insert for my threading holder. No problem. Except. The screw is left hand thread. The inserts I find are 16ER. The "R" is right handed. But is this right handed threads? Or does it just mean it fits right handed tooling (which is what I have)?

In other words, will a 16ER insert cut left handed threads?

I think what you want is a 16EL Acme. Having said that, I was looking at my standard 16ER inserts and the cutting edge looks pretty symmetrical, no lead angle, but an Acme requires more clearance, so not sure.

Why not grind a HSS tool? Depending on pitch and diameter, an acme thread may require more clearance on the leading flank.

I don't know anything about ACME inserts.
However, would it be less expensive and easier to buy an ACME L hand tap?
After the project is completed you could likely sell it for what you have invested, or add it to your inventory of misc.
Can't have enough tools....

You might check Carmex, lay down insert size 16 External Left Hand thread ACME 6, 8, 10 and 12.
