Would it be possible to use a D style back plate on a threaded spindle? It would make it easier to lock the back plate in place for reverse turning, yet easier to change from 3 to 4 jaw. And it seems there are better deals on D style chucks

I suppose you could go to the trouble of making a D style adapter plate, and screwing it onto your threaded spindle, perhaps with Loctite. But then, your chucks would be hanging farther out on the spindle, making them less rigid. And you'd lose some distance between centers.

Thanks for the reply. I dont mind the loss between centers but on a 9x20 I dont want to lose any more rigidity.
