I finally tinkered with thread cutting last weekend for the first time and while I made some mistakes that I'm now educated to fix, I am looking for guidance on tooling. I'd like to pick up indexable inserts and appropriate holders for both external and internal threading (just basic 60* threading for now - no different types/pitches/etc till I get the basics down). I know basic threading can be done with triangular inserts but those would not work, as I can figure at the moment, for threads that were run right up to a shoulder or some other design feature that would have me crashing the tool into the work. I imagine a different shaped insert or perhaps a different orientation on how the insert was help would solve that issue.

In any event, I'd appreciate any input on specific products and insert styles you guys have found to be solid choices for thread cutting.
(edit - I can use 3/8" or 1/2" tool holders on my lathe. I run a BXA toolpost)

Thanks!

Todd

Can't help on inserts, but this is what I use, first is OD threading, second id ID threading, 1/4" cutter from LMS, home ground 1/2" for larger stuff.

Thanks for the input, Jim. Are you just using straight HSS and grinding it to your needs?

Why not start with HSS tools? I do all my threading with them; Bokum sells Hss internal threading bars that are sharpened only on top, the angle is form ground and circular in shape, for external threading, I use threading tools from Aloris, they have a special holder that fits their tool posts, They are also made with the angle form ground, except straight and are also only sharpened on top. HSS tools are much more forgiving than carbide when little accidents happen.

Yes, I have a SB9C, with a 1/3 HP motor.
Not enough power to run carbide.

Gotcha. I have a Grizzly G4003 running on 1.5 HP. Not massive by any means, but has been able to run what carbide I've used. I'm still a complete novice and am still learning how to tell crap from shinola on most procedures beyond the real basics! :D

I use the same inserts as MrWhoopee, AG60 16ER. I got mine from Precision Matthews when I got my lathe. I'm not very good at thread cutting yet. But I am improving and as far as I know the inserts are not the problem.
