The best way to lift a radial drill?

Arky and I are going to pickup a Bickford radial drill tomorrow and wanted to know if anyone on here has ever moved one. What is the best way to get hold of it for lifting?
We're also picking up a Steptoe shaper, a Tug lathe and a Rambaudi milling machine. Nothing under 4500#

Two guys picking up 4500 pound machines, Arky must be a real man!

All I can say is "Be careful". Those are way out of my league.

Best done with a forklift if you can get it blocked up enough to get under it. Run the head all the way down and locked. Also be sure the column is locked over the bed. Don't want it swinging around. They're a little top heavy anyway, so i it has the knee, remove it so you can lower the head all the way down.

Thanks Tony, but we had to leave the forklift in Texas and have a crane coming in the morning to lift. I couldn't find anything up high to fasten to for a lift. I pulled the forklift to Hooks on my trailer, and hauled back a milling machine and the 9X36 drill. That was the heaviest load I think I've ever hauled on that trailer and it was built to haul a forklift. We winched the mill and drill onto the trailer. Was going to bring the lathe back also but it started raining and couldn't back the other trailer up to the door. As it was I had to be winched out of the yard onto the highway. The wet grass was just too slick, it was an uphill climb, and a very heavy load. I hope the ground dries out some before we go back. I was really to busy to take pics. I'll get some when we unload.

Bill, actually it was Arky, myself and my wife, and we try to stay careful. Oh yeah, the Steptoe shaper is probably going to weigh as much as the mill and drill combined. It has a 36 inch stroke.

You could probably sling the drill choker style right around the arm very close to the column. It won't pull up straight, but the bed will be low, and keep the slign tight against the column. Even with the head locked, a lot of stress is on the elevator screw, but you should be fine that way. I've moved a 7,000 lb Soraluce that way without a problem.

You da man, Tony. We slung it just like you said and no problems. Thanks for the info. I had thought about lifting from the arm but was afraid of stripping the elevator screw or whatever it operates with. Got everything inside and going back for another load Saturday. Pictures to follow.

Good deal Patrick. If I was nearby I could have come and lent a hand. Looking forward to the pictures. Did you get a knee with it?

This is the Mill and Drill. The Steptoe shaper and the Tug lathe will be Saturday, I hope. We'll have to hope the weather cooperates. I tried to post the pictures but they all came out sideways. That isn't the way I took them and there is no instruction on how to rotate them in manage attachments

Patrick

No, I think you have to rotate them before upload. If you're in Windows(7), Live Photo Manager will do it, as will several others in older Windows versions.

Tony, when I preview the pics before I upload them they are oriented correctly. Then I upload them and they are rotated 90 degrees clockwise.
