[How do I?] Taper Lock Bushing

I've never used Taper Lock Bushings. I have some coming, so I can't inspect them yet to see how they are fixed to a shaft. In my case, I'm using it on a motor which has a straight shaft with a key and I'm ALSO using the taper lock bushing on my mill's spindle which doesn't have standard key cuts.

Basically my question is, does the taper lock bushing somehow pinch down with a thru bolt. I see a slit in the bushing but since I don't have the bushings yet, I can't tell how it clamps onto a shaft, if in fact it does ? Do I need to drill and tap a hole for a set screw to lock the key in ?

Taper lock bushings are just that, taper locking. The pulley, gear, or sheave has a corresponding taper to the bushing. As you tighten the set screws the bushing and the pulley, gear, or sheave are forced together and the taper then clamps down on the bushing, then in turn clamps down on the shaft. No further modifications are required for the assembly to work.

That's a different way of doing it.... The ones that Princess Auto sell here have a wider "plate" on one side of the center bushing, with holes that you put regular bolts through that screw into the pulley to pull the two pieces together and tighten on the shaft. They also have two other threaded holes in that "plate" that you use the two bolts to force the two pieces apart to disassemble them

Yeah, that's the old Browning style QD bushings. The only difference I see is the PA uses two screws instead of three as Browning used. Both the Dodge and Browning are the best in my book on securing a sheave to a shaft. They don't tell you in the instructions sheet, use a torque wrench for seating the screws in the bushing properly and using the proper torque on the screws. You can also use a dial indicator to get the sheaves running true if you like too.
