I have a large bottle of Tap Magic Pro Tap and it seems to stain steel if not removed quickly. I am not happy with this. If I knew, I wouldn't have bought it. I assumed the "Pro" version is better.

What else can I use that works well and doesn't stain?

Probably the sulfur content?

I use TapMagic EP-Xtra regularly & I don't get staining. Well I have had some discoloring if left on my vise for a very long time. Very rarely though. I usually just wipe off the excess, not even a thorough cleaning, & don't get staining. Comes right off with light scotchbrite. Well I think it was from the EP-Xtra.

I use Boelube90 also, not normally for steel, but it's good for most anything. It doesn't stain anything I've used it on but these days it's not cheap. I always thought Anchorlube doesn't stain but @Bamban reported that it does stain cast iron.

EDIT: Just looked up TapMagic ProTap. If that's the biodegradeable clear stuff, they say it's not supposed to stain steel or aluminum.

Here's the stuff I'm using. I don't think it's biodegradable. The back label states: "After use of this product, clean and lubricate metal surfaces to avoid staining and/or corrosion." I have stains on my mill table from this stuff.

I just ordered the Boelube set. It looks promising if it works as well as stated. No staining, no odors, maximizes cutter life. I usually use WD40 on Aluminum, this is better?

No idea if it works better but it works. IIRC Boelube was designed for use with MQL systems. I don't normally use Boelube or WD40 on alumnium so I can't share any feedback.

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I decided to buy some Tap Magic EP-Xtra from MSC since I'm running low on Boelube and this is a lot cheaper.

After getting the bottle and reading the back label, it says: "After use of this product, clean and lubricate metal surfaces to avoid staining and/or corrosion." WTF! This is exactly what the Pro Tap bottle says. This was the whole reason for buying this product since I stopped using the Pro Tap stuff. I'm really annoyed and want to send this back.

I like CRC TrueTap when I need cutting oil. It's castor oil based instead of cracked palm oil in Tap Magic. I just dab it on with a drop applicator. I'm not offended by the smell or skin contact, and it most definitely does not stain your machine or work. Would you consider a switch from Coke to Pepsi?

Hmm.. maybe you & I have a common denominator. I've switched to another cutting fluid & going to use that exclusively, then see if there is a difference

The picture of the back of the bottle in the MSC website doesn't show that stain/corrosion statement. That's why I ordered it. Tap Magic must be changing formulas. The Pro Tap bottle I have from MSC has the staining statement. The new ones don't. Frustrating.

I contacted customer service at MSC. Let's see what they do. If CRC True Tap doesn't stain and works, I'm in!!!

So, I contacted MSC and they asked the supplier who stated that EP-Xtra is milder than ProTap. They claim all cutting fluids will stain and recommend cleaning to avoid staining.

I have a piece of mild steel with EP-Xtra on it for over 2 weeks. I see no staining yet. Maybe, it's okay. It might be a lawyer disclaimer to be safe?

I thought that was the end of it. A few days ago, I get an email from MSC stating a full credit for the EP-Xtra bottle. Nice! I wasn't expecting this, it just came out of the blue. Kudos to MSC!
