Just getting my LMS 5500 under power and about ready to make chips. I have noticed the quill, when operated by the "drill-press spokes" is VERY stiff, and if it slips out of your hand you can get a good knuckle-wack from it! Just wondering if there is any way to adjust the tension - the "user manual" (as expected) says nothing... :-(

It's the bigger brother to your Mill, but there are similarities between all the Sieg Mills, so you might find some helpful info in the Grizzly SX3 Manual and the Disassembly Guide by ArcEurotrade.

You will definitely find the Break-in procedure, you mentioned in your other thread, in the Grizzly Manual for the SX3/G0619.

Thanks - will check out those manual!

BTW - The "fine adjust" control on the 5500 isn't so 'fine'. I think because the spring is so tight it is hard to move the quill in fine increments. Thankfully I'm adding a 3-axis DRO and may be able to use the head-movement for finer control.

That new Grizzly bench top drill press had very stiff return.

Took a few turns of spindle return spring, all is good now.

Depends on what one likes, some might prefer a "tighter" feel...

Charl - interesting idea. The tension now is such that I do think most would consider it TIGHT as I almost pull a hernia when trying to lower the quill... Well - maybe not that bad, but sure is not 'hand-friendly' nor 'fine feed' friendly. Will def keep this idea in mind. Thanks!

Well - good old You Tube came thru again! Found a great tutorial vid on rewinding a clock spring (on Bridgeport) for quill and the trick just might be the 5500 needs
