Getting ready to take .002 of a little 3 cyl. Diesel head. Off a kiotoi tractor I think.
I have a suburban tool fly cutter and yes imo it was worth the money.
Ok this head is cast iron , 7 inches wide so i’m Going to swing 8 in. 4in from center of arbor.any thoughts on spindle speed and feed? I only have 3 choices of spindle speeds 500. -750. -1150
Thanks ron

On an 8" swing - 500 rpm - that is 1000 fpm! A 0.002" cut! That may be a tough go. That is awfully fast for HSS. That is a rather shallow cut for any fly cutter (carbide or HSS). HSS is nice, because you can get it keen (you'd likely need to sharpen part way along). You could try a very small radius brazed carbide (grind your own) - the trick will be to complete the job in a single pass.

Why not take it to a grind shop (there is a reason that heads are normally ground).

Ran it at 750 spindle rpm and 5 inches minute of feed. Came out fine. The guy I did it for has 2 grinders. He said these small heads were a pain.
The picture shows some sweep marks. Theirs nothing that you can feel with a fingernail.
