What to you fellows use for coolant on your surface grinders? I have a Boyar-Schultz 612 Challenger. I have a mist coolant set up that I use on my mill and a a couple of pumps that can be used for coolant or oil. I am thinking of using oil because the machine will be infrequently used and I dont think that water based coolant sitting on and under parts of the machine would be a good thing. I have a 5 gallon bucket of Rustlick PB-1 water soluble oil. Must be really old because I cant find any info on it. Any recommendations?

Grind dry unless you really need to add coolant.
A mist system is preferable to flood coolant for your situation

I have been grinding dry and taking very light cuts ( tenth or two). things heat up pretty fast and then have to wait a while before I measure. I do have a mist system but I end up with "grinding mud" when using that. Rustlick 5050 I believe is the coolant I use in that. Works well on the mill when doing general work with end mills or fly cutters.
I use cutting oil on the mill when I flute rifle barrels. works great but I am only turning the cutter (1.5 inch) at about 180 to 200 rpm. I was going to cut some rifle recoil lugs with that oil but I think that I might end up with oil all over everything. I may just keep grinding dry.
