Steady rest

I have a Monarch Model K lathe. I'm sure at some point I'll need a steady rest. So I need to make one. I've seen them with both ball bearing and bronze plugs holding the work. Any opinions as to which is better. I've seen postings of homemade ones and I can't remember where. If you've made a steady rest for you're lathe I would appreciate you're imput and a picture would be great also. Thanks in advance for you're help. Roger

It is a lengthy thread but it is a step by step tutorial, well worth the read.
