Hey everyone,

I am trying to freshen up a Standard Modern 1340 lathe. I am going through everything and want to make sure everything is straight and would like to know if anyone has the drawings

Thanks, Steve

AJ, thank you. I have been to that website, but totally forgot about it. The drawings there are so much better than the ones in the standard modern manuals. That is exactly what I needed!

Those ARE Standard Modern manuals. When you get a rare/unusual/unavailable manual, return the favor and post it for the community.

Standard Modern is no longer the company it was. It's been bought and sold a number of times. The quality of the docs has dropped every time. To be fair, I have never had less than helpful replies from them, even now, but it's clear that the older machines are a bit of a lost art. And the current company just can't or won't publish, or maybe even no longer has the kind of detail needed to really address questions like yours.

Hobby machinists are a community. Anytime there's a chance to make a resource- particularly a scarce one- available, take the opportunity. Someone, someday, will be helped.

I hear you there. It seems companies now like to keep everything a secret, so you are forced to send things into them. Just like vehicles, they make more money for service then they do on sales. At first glance, I thought everything was ok with my SM, but upon closer inspection, there are some gears missing. I was able to obtain a quote from Racer Machinery fairly quickly. Now I just have to scrape up the funds to get the gears I need(not cheap). Hopefully, I will be up and running in a few weeks. I've decided to go ahead and invest some more money in this machine because I like it. Hopefully it will be worth the investment. To top it off, I was having a hard time getting the original run/stop/reverse lever to work with the VFD....turns out the limit switch in the back was bad. Replacement is $150!! For a limit switch! Crazy.

Post a picture of the limit switch. Somebody may be able to suggest a more economical alternative.

I'll put a pic up later today. I cross referenced it to a square D 900710T68 switch. The original was a Telemecanique C3-JK04.

You will be delighted with the machine. Unless it's horribly beat-up, it is worth the investment. I've had mine for 20+ years; it's a 1978 model 1334, bought out of an army depot with almost no hours on it. Built when original SM was making very high quality machines. LeBlond used to sell parts in the US, may still (sit down before looking). Boston Gear 16 dp should work, so dig through e-bay; you'll find some that can be made to fit. Ditto, watch e-bay for other parts; there's a guy parting out a model that should have matching components. Bearings are all still available too. Haven't tried to talk to Racer, did have conversations with most if not all of the previous owners of the brand, who were all helpful if they could be, but it's clear that files have been lost or forgotten. Hopefully Racer is a stable company who will support SM for a long time.
