How would i make a 5/16 square hole down a 2 inch long, 5/8 or 3/4 cylinder? Is this a jpb for a square file, or is there a broaching tool (not for keyways) that would do it?

You could buy a square broach, certainly, but they aren't cheap. Is this for one piece? Do you have welding equipment?

You could use the lathe and a boring bar as a makeshift shaper.
Stationary of course, don't spin it.:nono:
It would work for a one-off job.

I needed a 1/4" sq. hole in alum. about 1/2" dp. and used a small end mill for most of it and used a new HSS tool bit in a vice to take care of the corners and it worked out great for it, just make sure it goes in straight. A small drill bit in the corners will maybe work for the 2" length and hog out the rest with a mill then use a file to clean the corners this might work too, just a thought if you don't want to buy a broach for a one of job. Some people make a rotary broach if you are capable enough to try it.

I bought my SB lathe a few blocks from Watts it's near Pittsburgh, PA. I plan on going to the dealer from who I got my lathe from for a friend of mine that wants one and would be neat to stop at Watts to see the place first hand. I guess they are still in business. They do make some other things too.
