Can someone tell me if this is right. The spyglass oil level of my carriage is situated very low.According to my lathe manual this is where it is suppose to be.

It says in the manual "oil level gauge". When I bought the lathe, there only used to be a bolt sitting there, what you see is actually a spyglass I made out of a brass bolt and part of a contact lense container.

I don't know how the manufacturer ment it to indicate where the oil level is,so I made that. My question is, is there only suppose to be so little oil in the carriage. I have put in about 2-3L of oil before it shows on the level. I feel there should be more in there if you look at the size of the carriage or am I missing something.

Can someone shine some light on this for me? Does it work with some kind of pickup or spray system inside like it does in the headstock? Would it hurt if there is a little too much oil in there? I would really appreciate it if someone can answer these questions.

Another question I asked on a previous post, but got no reply yet is, after how many should spindle and gearbox oil be changed hours?

Likely, it only needs enough oil so that the larger gears can pick it up when the carriage is moving. Some more expensive lathes may have a pump to circulate oil, and many older lathes may have no standing oil at all; there is not a great need for a lot of oil in a carriage as compared to a headstock.
