- Here are two views of a common style of Spin Index:
The only mounting feature is for collets, usually the 5C size. This model is limited to about a 1 1/16" diameter on the gripping diameter of the collets. It has a ring with 36 holes spaced 10 degrees apart and there are 10 Vernier holes in the frame that allow further dividing those 10 degree increments into single degrees. Thus, it can be set to any whole number of degrees from 1 to 360. A feature that is unique to this kind of device is the spindle can both rotate and move along the axial direction. Some have used this feature to allow sharpening of things like the flutes of milling cutters. Neither a rotary table nor an indexing head has this ability. There are other types and styles of Spin Indexes.
