Special taps

Does any one know where I can buy something called a "cable tap" It's a tap made for threading a fitting to screw onto a control coil (cable housing). The cable is your standard lawnmower throttle cable
I measured some new cable . It is 3/16" diameter and 14 tpi

I have bought special taps from a company named Widell; they manufacture taps to order, if not a stock item, I had them make a non standard 2 1/2" pipe tap for threading a casting for a new water end casting for the steam yacht Cangarda.

It's not really a made to order tap. They have been made for many years. I just can't seem to locate any of the companies that make them. Maybe I am notcalling it by the proper name?

I would probably try to single point thread it. If you don't need a complete thread, you could cut a 7/16-14 nut in half and make a clamp from it. The helix angle will be wrong but for the amount of engagement with the cable, it should work. With a liuttle more effort, a custom clamp could be made by tapping the hole in a block and cutting. Cross holes could be drilled for clamping screws.

single point threading 100 of these fittings would be way too time consuming. A tap has to be the way to go

That being the case, I would just build a tap or two. Some O-1 or W-1 drill rod would make a good tap.

Yes, that works, but it means making a form tool for the spiral-wire radius. At 14 tpi, it'd be one-fourteenth of an inch diameter, 0.036" radius,
and making such an HSS tool freehand seems like a bit of a challenge, too. I'm imagining a stereo microscope and Dremel
tool.

Another option: 5/16" threaded rod, drilled down the bore, secured over the cable end with epoxy.

Nope, I sell the cables for restoration of 1940's / 50's Harleys. Got to be correct. I'm not sure I could even hand thread a forming tap o my lathe.
