Hello all, I'm new to this site and forums in general. I have a southbend shaper I would like to know the value of. All I know about it is that it is a southbend 7" shaper. It is 100 percent operational but not much to look at. With a little elbow grease and some paint it will clean up nice. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Joe, any chance you could post some photos? That would make it easier for the guys to (1) suggest a value and (2) decide to buy it, if that's what you have in mind.

Aye, Aye hawkeye! Thank you! These are a little grainy but you'll get the idea.

Joe, the pics didn't stick. I find the easiest way to post photos is to go up in the reply window and click on the icon in the middle row that shows "Insert Image" when you hover over it. Before you do that, position the curser where you want the picture to appear - usually not at the end of a line of text. This will bring up a box that gives a choice of "From Computer" or "From URL". Pick the appropriate one, then hit "Select Files" at the bottom.

When you have selected your photo(s), click "Upload Files". It (they) will go into the window where your curser was. If you select more than one, they will appear in alpha-numeric order.

Hope this helps.

A few years ago it would have brought a grand now maybe 500. The vise and the stand are worth as much as the shaper...Bob

Bob, thanks for your reply. Originally I thought I was going to sell it, and I thought I'd ask 400 for. The more I think about it, the more I think I'd like to keep it. It really is a cool little machine. I'm going to start by cleaning it, then we'll see. Thanks again. I would really appreciate any advice you can offer, I also welcome any info or advice any one else may offer.

If you are a hobby machinist, you should keep it. As you say, they are cool little machines, and unique in their operation.
Have fun cleaning and tuning it. You will be surprised how useful it is. The finish they produce is impossible to duplicate with a mill.

Thanks AR1911, my machining is my trade, but I love to tinker and do look forward to actually using it. Thanks again, and as always, advice is truly appreciated!

I have the first gen SB shaper like yours and just love it. The first thing i did was make a big ring to slip over the toolpost so i could use 3/8" sq HSS or carbide cutting tools without the regular Armstrong or Williams tool holders that use a 1/4" HSS tool bit (first pic). I payed 300 for mine minus the stand and just put on 2 new belts and some cord after a good clean up. I wish i knew more of the history of mine but there is no info on them like with the lathes...Bob
