As always , no dumb questions on H-M .

Question wasn't that dumb, it was about ER collet squeeze. I have a metric set, but just calculated the amount of squeeze for certain sizes to fit an imperial size. Was wondering how much squeeze is ok. My question was answered in a different thread about collets. More expensive and better brands can squeeze more and stay on size than cheap brands. Go figure!

But for myself, my answer is to just find a reasonably priced imperial set, and get better fit for imperial sizes. If I get a 1/16" set, I am mostly set. In a way it is astonishing the mismatch between metric and imperial. Half the sizes have squeezes greater than 0.5mm. Don't know if that is good or bad, honestly.

The less squeeze used in getting up to grip, the better. I opted for the metric ER32, partly because the ER design with interleaving slits from both ends manages to grip parallel along it's axis, and also because each size accommodates a greater squeeze range than 5C. I think the usual metric set sizes overlap to leave no gaps in the full range, but I can see that having an imperial set could be useful if you need to be mostly using inches.

Compared to ER style, the C-Series collets need to be much closer to the work size. I think one needs a whole lot more of them to cover a given range of sizes.

I have appreciated that in this company, there are no "dumb" questions.

Wobbly,
I bought my set from Travers.
I think it was around $325. ER 40.
It’s been a good set so far. I did replace one, the quality wasn’t up to snuff.
