I need a mandrel diameter that's out of stock (and has been for a while) from a manufacturer. They do have inventory available for mandrels which are 0.001" over size, is it possible to take 0.0005" off solid carbine stock with a mini lathe? Nominal diameter is about 0.285", length about 2.5". there is sufficient holding material (not part of the mandrel) to hold with an ER chuck. The OEM mandrels are said to be precision ground, maintaining cylindricity and mirror surface finish are vital.

My other choice is to see about getting the size I need on back order, then making my own version from mild steel as a stopgap.

Thank you.

Are you asking if you could turn it ? If so , not likely . Maybe try a diamond hone to remove .0005 off the diameter . Not knowing what you're making , could you machine a spud for the ID and cut the OD concentric ?

Possible? Yes.

Its unlikely you have the equipment to do this though.

You would need a suitable tool post grinder and a tiny diamond wheel to suit.

I think my best best is to turn a stopgap out of mild steel while waiting for a carbide OEM. There are a few features like a stepped area, a circlip groove and a tapered end I can handle.

Thanks.
