snow blower gears locking up

My dad brought his snowblower to help me clear my drive(God bless that man) Fortunately we accomplished enough to allow us to get in and out, but after we got so far the wheels locked up. Upon inspection we noticed that if we seperated one cog from the gearing (as shown) we could at least get the thing to roll again, though we weren't about to tryengaging the self-propel that way. we can't visibly see anything wrong with the cogs in the system but when we reintroduce the cog the gears lock up and nothing will turn. Any thoughts?

Type and model of snow blower would help.

Does it roll freely with the drive disengaged? Does the portion of the drive assembly move ( closest to the engine ) when it's disengaged?

I would think that the gears should have some kind of lubrication, they all look dry. The smaller gear in the middle of your last picture looks damaged.

I don't think it actually disegages from the gears, the friction plate that does engage with a rubberized wheel that turns the shaft that the drive gears are on does spin as the engine runs. The handle lever that is used to bring the plate to the wheel functions properly, but regardless of whether the friction clutch is engaged the gears are locked. Cannot determine whether the rubber is squealing over the noise of the engine.

Also Dad just informed he was looking up info on replacement parts and the design seems to have changed. That smaller gear is no longer included.

Check the support bushings or bearings on the shafts. If they are loose the gears may try to walk over the top instead of staying meshed with one another. This effect will increase with a load against the output shaft.
