This is a help me buy stuff thread....
I'd like to get 1 to 3 threadmills and have most of the range of threads I'm likely to cut covered.
Based on this page, they seem to come in standard numbered sizes.
From my read of it, you trade smallest threaded hole size (cut dia.) for TPI range.
So for the #6 vs #8 - the #6 can cut finer threads than the #8 - I'm guessing this is because of the flat on the tip of the cutter?
Obviously the neck diameter and LOC will affect stiffness.
If I'm only going to get a few, what's a good choice to cover typical stuff (yeah, my typical might not be yours).
I'd probably skip the coarse 12 - 10 end for now, but it also looks like 3 would provide good coverage for the full range.
Regarding LOC, I'd be inclined to go with the longer mills - you can always cut shorter and flex due to stiffness can be accommodated for by going slower. If I ended up with a situation where cycle time really mattered to me I can always buy a specific tap or mill.
What's your experience and suggestions?
Thanks.
