silly question

If you mean old lantern type Armstrong tool holders, they are made in right hand, left hand, and straight forms. The right hand ones cut starting on the right (tailstock) end of the lathe. Their bend keeps them from hitting the chuck, and makes facing cuts easier. Also,if the tool holder started to slip sideways under pressure, the angle of the bit would swing the cutter AWAY from the work, rather than allowing the cutter to dig in deeper, possibly ruining the project, and the lathe, too, could be overloaded and damaged. Left hand keeps the holder from hitting the tailstock. I seldom,if ever used a straight one, except for maybe a straight cut off tool,as the old lantern type holders were easily bent down some under the pressure of a cut.
